Urijah

Urijah is a form of the Hebrew name often written Uriah, combining a word for light or flame with a reference to God. Its meaning is usually expressed as Yahweh is my light. The spelling Urijah occurs in biblical translation traditions and should not be treated simply as a modern decorative alteration.

In Jeremiah, Urijah is the name of a prophet whose story appears alongside the account of Jeremiah's own danger. He is distinct from Uriah the Hittite, the warrior associated with David and Bathsheba. Keeping those figures separate gives the name a more accurate biblical explanation. Families may choose Urijah for the light meaning, a scriptural connection, or the spelling used in a Bible familiar to them.
