Usman

Usman is a form of the Arabic name Uthman, traditionally explained as a young bustard, a type of large bird. Although that literal meaning may be unfamiliar in English, the name’s religious history is often the more important association. Uthman ibn Affan was the third caliph and a son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.

Usman is well established in South Asian Muslim naming, while Uthman and Othman are other Latin-letter forms and Osman is a related Turkish form. The different spellings reflect language and transcription traditions rather than completely separate names. A family may prefer Usman because it matches the spelling used by relatives or in its community while preserving that historical connection.
