Van

Van has several uses as a name. In Dutch surnames, van means “from” or “of” and connects a family name with a place. As an English given name, Van can also be a shortening of longer names, so that Dutch explanation does not describe every bearer’s history. Unaccented Vietnamese spellings may represent still other names with distinct meanings.

Pianist Van Cliburn was born Harvey Lavan Cliburn, making him a useful example of a personal short-form history. Van is compact enough to stand alone, with a single syllable and three letters. Parents can choose it as a full name or preserve a longer family name behind it.
