Wayland

Wayland is the English form of Weland, the legendary smith known across Germanic storytelling. The older name is often connected with a root relating to craft or skill, although its derivation is not completely settled. Its history is therefore richer than simply reading the modern English words way and land as a complete explanation.

The smith appears under related names such as Wieland in German and Völundr in Old Norse tradition. His stories involve remarkable craftsmanship, captivity, and revenge, so they are more complex than a simple tale of a heroic maker. Wayland also survives in English place associations, including Wayland’s Smithy. For parents, the strongest established connection is to this long-lived legendary craftsman and the cultural memory of skilled work.
