Wendell

Wendell comes through a Germanic name family whose older forms are commonly linked with the Vandals, an ancient people. Another explanation connects the root with movement or wandering. These possibilities account for the familiar wanderer interpretation, but the precise early history is less certain than that simple translation suggests.

Wendel is a closely related spelling, while Wendell became established in English through both surnames and given names. American lawyer and judge Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and presidential candidate Wendell Willkie provide historical examples. The name can preserve an inherited family connection without requiring a family to choose between its debated ancient derivations. Its doubled final consonant gives the English form a recognizable written identity.
