Whit

Whit is a short form that can come from English surnames such as Whitman, Whitaker, or Whitney. Those longer names often contain an old element meaning “white,” but their complete meanings differ because each has its own second element and history. Whit keeps the shared opening while allowing the family connection to determine which longer name stands behind it.

It can also be used independently, with no longer form required on official records. That makes it useful for someone who likes the brevity of a nickname but wants it to be the complete name. A Whit named for a Whitaker and a Whit named for a Whitney may share a spelling while carrying different personal stories, which is part of the flexibility of this surname-based short form.
