Will

Will is a familiar form of William, whose Germanic elements refer to will or desire and a helmet or protection. It can also shorten other names beginning with Wil, such as Willard, which have different roots. The meaning of a particular Will therefore depends partly on the full name or family connection behind it.

Will has long been used independently as well as informally. William provides the best-known longer option, while Willy adds another syllable to the short form. Parents may choose Will directly for its compact sound or preserve a relative’s full name on documents, with the everyday form remaining the same.
