Willem

Willem is the Dutch form of William, a name built from old Germanic elements associated with will or desire and a helmet. The familiar interpretation resolute protector brings those elements together, while the helmet supplies the original image of protection. Willem retains a specifically Dutch form within a name family used across many European languages.

The painter Willem de Kooning and actor Willem Dafoe give the exact spelling recognizable connections with the arts. William is the clearest English relative, but Willem has its own sound and history rather than functioning only as an unusual English spelling. It can preserve a Dutch family name or provide a direct connection with Dutch language and heritage.
