Wolfgang

Wolfgang is a German name made from older elements referring to a wolf and a journey, path, or movement. “Traveling wolf” is a useful summary of the combination, although the original construction is a personal name rather than a phrase describing an actual animal. It has a long history beyond contemporary nature naming.

Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe give the name particularly strong artistic associations. Chef Wolfgang Puck supplies a different modern connection. Wolf and Wolfie are familiar shorter forms that preserve the opening element. The German initial w has a v-like sound, an important distinction for English-speaking families comparing the full name with the ordinary English word wolf.
