Wylder

Wylder is a spelling alternative to Wilder, with a y replacing the first i. It keeps the connection with the English word wild and the surname-style appearance of Wilder. That connection can suggest untamed landscapes or independence, but it does not give the name a literal meaning such as “adventurous child” or predict a person's temperament.

The changed vowel makes Wylder look less like the ordinary comparative word wilder while leaving the basic sound recognizable. Wilder is the most useful comparison when considering its history and associations. Wylder is a modern spelling choice within that family, not evidence of a separate ancient root. Its distinctive written form may need to be specified when the name is first given aloud.
