Yana

Yana is used in Bulgarian, Russian, and Ukrainian as a form of Jana, belonging to the wider John name family. The traditional meaning is God is gracious. Its initial y is useful in English-language writing because it suggests the sound used in these Slavic forms more directly than an English reader might expect from the letter j.

The same broad family includes Jane and Joan, giving Yana connections that may be less obvious from its short spelling. It can preserve a Slavic family name while still linking to relatives whose names use another language's form. Yana is a complete name in its own right, and its four letters carry a history much wider than a modern shortening or an invented sound.
