Yonah

Yonah represents the Hebrew name and word for a dove. English readers usually encounter the biblical form as Jonah, while Yonah keeps the initial sound closer to the Hebrew form. The prophet’s story includes a voyage, a great fish, and a reluctant journey to Nineveh, giving the name a substantial narrative beyond its bird meaning.

In modern Hebrew naming, Yonah and Yona can be used for boys and girls, although the biblical prophet is male. The final h in the English-letter spelling is a transliteration choice. Families may choose Yonah for the scriptural story, the dove itself, or a relative bearing the name. Peace can be a symbolic association of a dove, but the direct translation is the bird rather than the abstract word peace.
