Yossi

Yossi is a familiar Hebrew form of Yosef, the name represented as Joseph in English. The older name is traditionally understood as God will add, linking Yossi with a much longer biblical name family. Its shortened form belongs especially to everyday Hebrew naming, where an affectionate name may also become the name used publicly and professionally.

Choosing Yossi can honor a Joseph or Yosef while keeping the sound a family actually uses in conversation. The double s helps distinguish its written shape from the longer forms without creating a separate literal meaning. Its history is that of a familiar form standing independently, rather than a newly combined name. That makes the relationship to Yosef an important part of its story, even when Yossi is the legal first name.
