Zalmen

Zalmen is a Yiddish form in the Solomon name family. Its Hebrew relative Shlomo is associated with shalom, the word for peace. The Yiddish spelling records how that biblical name developed in Ashkenazi Jewish communities, rather than being a recent shortening created from English Solomon.

The family connection brings to mind King Solomon and the biblical stories of his wisdom and judgment. Wisdom is an association with that figure, while peace is the name's inherited meaning. Zalman is a closely related written form, and either spelling may reflect the pronunciation or records of a particular family. For someone choosing a name to remember an ancestor, retaining Zalmen can preserve the Yiddish form itself instead of replacing it with an English or modern Hebrew equivalent.
