Zeppelin

Zeppelin is the name of a type of airship, taken from Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who developed the design. The surname is associated with the German place Zepelin. That chain from place to surname to aircraft is more reliable than presenting a speculative Slavic tool word as the direct meaning of a baby's name.

The rock band Led Zeppelin supplies another recognizable association, separate from aviation history. As a given name, Zeppelin may therefore refer to music, flight, or a family surname rather than one fixed symbolic quality. Its unusual spelling makes the reference fairly explicit. The word denotes a particular airship tradition; it is not simply a translation of sky, freedom, or adventure.
