Amour

Amour is the French word for love, used as a personal name as well as an everyday noun. Its history leads back to Latin amor, keeping the meaning unusually direct. For parents drawn to a name that expresses affection, there is no complicated compound to unpack: the central idea is the feeling itself.

French uses amour in writing, songs, and ordinary expressions, so the name carries a strong connection to the language beyond its use on a birth certificate. Its grammatical gender as a French noun does not determine who can bear it as a personal name. A family might choose it to reflect a French-speaking connection or simply the meaning, while remembering that French speakers will also hear a familiar word when the name is spoken.
