Anton

Anton is a form of the Roman family name Antonius, also represented in English by Anthony. The original meaning of Antonius is uncertain. Familiar translations involving flowers or a place called Antium should therefore be treated as proposals, rather than a firm definition of every name in this family.

Anton is established in several European languages, including German, Russian, and the Scandinavian languages. Russian playwright Anton Chekhov supplies a well-known literary association. Toni is a shorter form in some traditions, and Antonio offers a longer relative. The written name travels readily between languages, although the stressed syllable and vowel sounds vary, so one English pronunciation cannot represent every family's usage.
