Asta

Asta is an established Scandinavian short form of Astrid, whose Old Norse elements combine a reference to a god with beauty. Through that name family, divine beauty is a conventional interpretation. Asta has also been used as a familiar form of Augusta, which has a separate Latin history associated with dignity and honor.

Danish silent-film actress Asta Nielsen gives the name a notable human namesake. English-speaking audiences may recognize it from the dog in The Thin Man stories and films, while newer audiences may know the male character Asta from Black Clover. These cultural appearances explain the name's varied associations without making them the source of its older Scandinavian use.
