Bennie

Bennie is an affectionate form used with several longer names. With Benjamin, it inherits the Hebrew meaning “son of the right hand.” With Benedict or Bennett, it connects to Latin benedictus, meaning “blessed.” The same short spelling can therefore carry a different family story depending on which longer name lies behind it, and it can also be used independently.

The -ie ending places Bennie among familiar English nickname forms that later became complete given names. Its musical association with Elton John’s Bennie and the Jets adds another recognizable layer. For parents honoring a Benjamin or Bennett, Bennie can keep the family link while using the informal form on the birth certificate. Benny offers an alternative spelling, and Ben is an even shorter option within the same group.
