Bobbie

Bobbie is a familiar form of Robert or Roberta, names built from Germanic elements meaning fame and bright. It belongs to the same nickname history as Bob, which developed alongside Rob. Bobbie has also been used independently, so a person with the name need not have Robert or Roberta as a longer official form.

E. Nesbit’s The Railway Children offers a literary example in Roberta, usually called Bobbie. Singer Bobbie Gentry gives the spelling another well-known cultural association. Bobby and Bobbi are related forms, but their endings do not create a strict rule about who may use them. Bobbie’s appeal can rest on a family name, a book, or its familiar conversational sound, while its longer history connects it to one of Europe’s enduring name families.
