Cru

Cru is a modern name that may be a spelling of Crew or a shortened form associated with Cruz or Crusoe. Those are separate possibilities, not a single shared meaning. A family choosing the Crew connection may value the English word for a group working together, while a Cruz connection has a different Spanish name history.

The three-letter spelling leaves those intentions open, so it should not automatically be translated as “cross” for every bearer. Crew makes the English word more obvious, whereas Cru gives the same sound a compact written form. The chosen family connection is therefore especially useful when explaining this name, which can stand alone without requiring one particular expansion.
