Dario

Dario is an Italian form of Darius, with Spanish Darío providing a closely related spelling. The older Persian royal name is traditionally interpreted as possessing or holding goodness. The name therefore has a history extending beyond its familiar Romance-language ending and is not derived from the similar-looking Mario.

Darius was borne by several ancient Persian kings, giving Dario an inherited historical connection. The accented Spanish form makes the stressed vowel visible, while the Italian spelling follows its own conventions. Dario’s three syllables provide a distinct alternative to Darius, preserving the same older name family in a form suited to different languages.
