What does Demir mean?
Demir means “Iron”.
Demir is the Turkish word for iron and is used as both a personal name and a surname. Its meaning is direct and concrete, connecting the name with a metal rather than a reconstructed ancient phrase. It also appears in Bosnian naming, reflecting the movement of names across languages and communities.
Musician Demir Demirkan provides an example of the given name, while footballer Yusuf Demir illustrates the surname. The resemblance to Damir can be misleading: Damir has more than one possible origin and should not automatically receive Demir’s iron meaning. Timur belongs to a related Turkic metal-name tradition, but Demir retains the form of the everyday Turkish word.
