Derrick

Derrick is a spelling related to Derek, which developed through the Dutch name Diederik from the wider Theodoric family. The older Germanic elements refer to people and a ruler, producing the conventional meaning “ruler of the people.” The meaning belongs to that personal-name history rather than the modern word for a lifting apparatus.

Rick and Ricky are available as short forms, while the full name has two clear syllables. Derek uses fewer letters, but Derrick retains the same central family connection. Parents may prefer one spelling because of a relative or a familiar bearer. The double r and final ck alter the name's appearance more than its usual spoken form in English.
