Elin

Elin belongs to the Helen family and is established in both Scandinavian and Welsh naming traditions. Helen’s ancient Greek origin is uncertain, although a connection with a word for a torch is a leading explanation. That is why Elin is often associated with light, while the exact original meaning deserves some qualification.

Elen is a related Welsh form, and Eline, Ellen, and Helena belong to the wider European family. These relationships give Elin a history beyond its appearance as a modern short name. Novelist Elin Hilderbrand is a recognizable contemporary bearer. For parents honoring a Helen or Ellen, Elin offers a genuine linguistic connection while retaining a spelling familiar in its own cultures, rather than simply changing letters for a new sound.
