Fischer

Fischer is a German occupational surname meaning “fisherman.” It records the kind of work a person once did, just as other surnames preserve a trade or craft. The spelling belongs to German-language naming and is found in both Jewish and non-Jewish families, so the surname alone does not identify one religious background.

As a first name, Fischer can carry a family surname forward or connect with a fishing tradition that matters personally. Fisher is its familiar English counterpart, sharing the occupation while using a different spelling. The sch in Fischer preserves the German written form, making the name a particularly direct choice for a family that wants its surname heritage visible rather than translated into English.
