Frederic

Frederic comes from a Germanic name combining elements for peace and rule. “Peaceful ruler” is the customary summary of those components. The spelling without a final k connects it especially with French Frédéric, while Frederick is the familiar English form of the same older name.

In French, the accents in Frédéric belong to the standard spelling and guide pronunciation; English-language records often show Frederic without them. Fred and Freddie can shorten either English form. This relationship allows a family to preserve the spelling used by a relative while recognizing equivalent forms in other languages. The peaceful meaning belongs to the name’s actual components, giving it a substantive connection with peace rather than one based solely on a modern impression of how the name sounds.
