Gerald

Gerald comes from Germanic elements meaning “spear” and “rule.” It has a long history in English and Irish naming, with related forms such as Gérald and Geraldo appearing in other languages. Gerard shares the spear element but has a different second part, so the two names are related in style rather than exact equivalents.

Former United States president Gerald Ford is a recognizable bearer, and the name has strong twentieth-century family associations for many Americans. Gerry and Jerry are established short forms that offer a softer everyday sound. Gerald may appeal to parents restoring a grandfather’s name while keeping several familiar nickname options. Its two-syllable form works without requiring an ornate or difficult spelling.
