Jerry

Jerry is a familiar short form used for several names, especially Gerald and Jerome. Gerald belongs to a Germanic name family involving spear and rule, while Jerome comes from Greek elements meaning “sacred name.” Jerry therefore does not have one meaning that applies to every bearer; the intended longer name provides the relevant history.

Jerry is also established as a complete given name, so a formal expansion is optional. Gerry offers a close spelling comparison and may make a Gerald connection more visible. Families honoring a relative can preserve the exact everyday name they knew, or choose Gerald or Jerome if they want the short form alongside a distinct formal option.
