Gerard

Gerard comes from Germanic elements referring to a spear and bravery or strength. Its meaning is often expressed as “brave with a spear,” reflecting the martial vocabulary found in many older European names. The name’s history extends across several languages rather than belonging only to modern English use.

Gérard is the accented French form, Gerardo is familiar in Spanish and Italian, and Gerhard preserves a more visibly Germanic spelling. Gerry offers a conventional everyday shortening. These related forms can help a family connect relatives whose names look different on paper. Gerard should also be distinguished from Gerald: the two share an opening, but their second elements and meanings differ.
