Gerrit

Gerrit is a Dutch and Frisian form of Gerard. Its older Germanic elements refer to a spear and bravery or strength, giving the name a traditional meaning often expressed as brave with the spear. The change from Gerard to Gerrit reflects the name’s development within particular languages, rather than a recent spelling variation created in English.

Designer Gerrit Rietveld provides a notable artistic connection: his furniture includes the Red Blue Chair, represented in major museum collections. That bearer gives Gerrit a place in design history as well as everyday Dutch naming. English readers may compare its appearance with Garrett, but Gerrit keeps its own established spelling and language identity. It offers a concise way to continue a Gerard family connection through a Dutch or Frisian form.
