Giulietta

Giulietta is an Italian diminutive of Giulia, the Italian form of Julia. Julia belongs to the Roman Julius family, whose deeper origin is uncertain. Proposed explanations involve an old word for downy hair or a connection with Jupiter, but the dependable name relationship is Giulia followed by the affectionate Italian ending -etta.

Giulietta is the Italian name associated with Shakespeare’s Juliet, giving it a strong literary and romantic reference. It also appears in Federico Fellini’s film Giulietta degli spiriti and as the name of an Alfa Romeo model. These cultural uses helped make the spelling recognizable beyond Italy. Juliet, Juliette, and Julieta are related forms in other languages, while Giulietta preserves the specifically Italian structure of the name.
