Gwyneth

Gwyneth is a Welsh name probably developed from Gwynedd, the name of a historic kingdom in northern Wales. Although it is often linked with the Welsh word for white or blessed, the place name’s own deeper history is uncertain. The geographic connection is therefore more secure than a single literal translation of the personal name.

Welsh writer Gwyneth Vaughan used the name as a pen name, and soprano Gwyneth Jones provides another prominent Welsh association. Actor Gwyneth Paltrow made it widely recognizable to international audiences. Gwen can serve as a familiar shortening, while Gweneth and Gwenyth are alternative spellings. Gwyneth’s strongest story combines a Welsh place connection with a continuing tradition of literary and artistic bearers.
