Helio

Helio is a Spanish form of Helios, the Greek word and divine name for the sun. Portuguese uses Hélio, with an accent, while Italian Elio is a related form familiar without the initial h. These spellings share a solar ancestry but belong to different language traditions.

In Greek mythology, Helios drives a chariot across the sky, making the sun's daily movement part of a personified story. His sister Selene represents the moon. Helio keeps that mythological connection in a shorter modern form, while its direct sun meaning also works independently of the ancient tales. Families drawn to celestial names can therefore approach Helio through the natural image, the Spanish spelling, or the broader Greek background, with each leading back to the same central association with the sun.
