Surya

Surya is a Sanskrit name for the sun and also identifies the sun deity in Hindu tradition. That gives it both a direct natural meaning and a religious history. The sun's daily appearance, warmth, and light provide the setting for its symbolism, while the deity belongs to a particular cultural tradition rather than a generic image of sunshine.

The expression Surya Namaskar, often translated as sun salutation, may make the name familiar to people who practice yoga. As a personal name, Surya can honor a family's Hindu heritage or carry the simple solar meaning. Although the deity is masculine, the name has also been used for girls. A family's own language and tradition are the best guide to how that meaning is expressed in everyday use.
