Hersh

Hersh is a Yiddish name meaning deer or stag. It has a long place in Ashkenazi Jewish naming and is related to forms such as Hirsch and Hersch. The Hebrew name Tzvi has the same animal meaning, so the two can be connected through translation without one simply being a shortened version of the other.

Hershel is a familiar affectionate form, while Hersh keeps the name compact. For a family preserving a Yiddish name, the exact English spelling may reflect how relatives wrote it after moving between countries and alphabets. The deer meaning provides a clear nature connection, but the deeper family value may lie in remembering a particular person. Both the word and the naming tradition are part of its story.
