Hershy

Hershy can be an affectionate form in the Yiddish Hersh and Hershel name family, whose root means deer or stag. That gives it a place in Ashkenazi Jewish naming, where a familiar form may be used in everyday life or chosen as the recorded given name. The final y represents the affectionate ending in English letters.

The spelling also resembles Hershey, the surname associated with the American chocolate company, but that commercial association is separate from the Yiddish given-name story. For a family preserving a Hersh or Hershel connection, Hershy keeps the recognizable opening while using the familiar form throughout. The animal meaning belongs to the older name family, giving the short everyday sound a specific linguistic background.
