Indy

Indy is used as a short form of Indiana and can also be associated with names such as Indigo. These longer forms have different histories, so Indy does not inherit one universal literal meaning. It also works independently, with a family’s chosen place, color, or personal association supplying its story.

Indiana Jones is frequently called Indy, while the Indianapolis 500 gives the spelling a separate sporting connection. Indie is a close written comparison but also evokes independent music and film. Those associations can coexist without making the names identical in origin, and choosing the complete form clarifies which connection a family intends to preserve.
