Ioanna

Ioanna is the Greek form of Joanna, a name in the John family. Its older Hebrew source expresses the meaning God is gracious. The initial Io- reflects the Greek written form, making Ioanna a traditional language variant with a long history rather than a modern rearrangement of Joanna.

The name Joanna appears in the New Testament among the women connected with Jesus’ ministry, giving the wider family a biblical setting. Ioanna preserves the Greek form of that name, while Ioana is a closely related Romanian spelling with one n. In English, the run of opening vowels may invite questions about pronunciation, but hearing the name usually makes its structure clearer. For a family choosing a Greek form of a familiar biblical name, Ioanna provides a direct connection.
