Issa

Issa is a way of writing the Arabic name Isa, the name used for Jesus in Islamic tradition. It is especially familiar in Muslim communities, including across parts of Africa. Through the broader Jesus and Joshua name family, it is associated with the idea of divine salvation, while its Arabic religious use gives it a distinct cultural setting.

A separate Japanese use appears in the pen name of haiku poet Kobayashi Issa, whose written name has a different meaning connected with tea. These two histories should be understood independently. Issa may also occur as a personal nickname in other languages. A family’s intended tradition therefore matters more than assigning one definition or one pronunciation to every bearer of the spelling.
