Jayne

Jayne is a spelling of Jane, an English name in the John family with the traditional meaning God is gracious. The added y changes its appearance without introducing a second root or a separate meaning. It remains closely connected with Jane, Joan, and Jean through the older name family, although each form has its own history of use.

A particular spelling can matter when a name is passed down through generations. Jayne preserves that detail while keeping a familiar single-syllable sound. It can also function as a complete name without an expected nickname, which gives it a directness similar to Jane. Its story is best understood as an established written variation within a long name tradition, rather than a newly invented word.
