Joanne

Joanne belongs to the Joanna and Johanna family, ultimately connected with the Hebrew name behind John and the meaning God is gracious. Its ending gives a different spoken rhythm from Joanna while preserving the same long-established family. Joann and Jo-Anne show other ways the familiar sound has been written.

The wider name family has a biblical connection through Joanna, named in the Gospel of Luke. Joanne later developed a substantial life in English-language naming, alongside forms such as Joan and Jean. Jo is a straightforward everyday shortening, while Joanne keeps the full two-part sound that distinguishes it from the shorter Joan and the three-syllable Joanna.
