Johnnie

Johnnie is a familiar form of John, whose Hebrew roots carry the meaning God is gracious. The added ending makes the formal name sound more affectionate, a pattern also seen in many other English nicknames. Johnnie has also been used as a complete registered first name rather than only as a shortened household form.

Although some people associate the -ie ending with girls and -y with boys, Johnnie has a history of use for both. Johnny is the closest spelling to compare, and the two generally share the same spoken form. For a family honoring a John, Johnnie can preserve the connection while giving the child an everyday name with a more relaxed rhythm. Its background remains the longstanding John family across either spelling.
