Jordi

Jordi is the Catalan form of George, ultimately from a Greek word for a farmer or worker of the earth. It is a full traditional name in Catalan, even though an English speaker may first hear it as a nickname. Its relationship with George gives it an international family of equivalents while preserving a specifically Catalan identity.

Sant Jordi is the Catalan name for Saint George, making the religious and cultural connection especially visible. For a family honoring a George or maintaining a Catalan connection, Jordi offers an established form with its own sound and spelling. The similar-looking Jordan has a separate history, so Jordi’s strongest linguistic story comes through George and the older Greek occupational meaning.
