Katarina

Katarina is an established form of the Katherine name family in several European languages, including Swedish, Slovak, Serbian, Croatian, and Slovenian. Katherine is traditionally associated with the Greek word for pure, although the earliest derivation of the name is uncertain. That traditional interpretation belongs to the wider family, rather than being created by Katarina’s spelling.

The form allows families to retain a Catherine or Katherine connection while using a spelling familiar in their own language. It should be distinguished from Russian Ekaterina and from Katerina, which changes the middle vowel. These forms share a broad history, but their spelling and pronunciation follow different language traditions rather than one universal English pattern.
