Katia

Katia is a form of Katya, the familiar Russian short form of Ekaterina. That places it within the wider Katherine family, alongside names such as Catherine and Katerina. The traditional meaning “pure” comes from a longstanding association with the Greek word katharos, although the earliest origin of Katherine is uncertain. Katia carries that familiar interpretation through a much shorter form.

The spelling with an i appears in several languages and may feel especially accessible to families who know the name through international friends or relatives. Its original role as a pet form does not prevent it from standing independently. Katia keeps the opening sound of Katerina while losing the longer middle syllables, offering a clear family connection for someone who wants to honor a Katherine without using the full name.
