Katharine

Katharine is one of the longstanding spellings in the Katherine and Catherine family. These names lead back to Greek Aikaterine, whose original derivation remains debated. The familiar meaning pure comes from a later association with the Greek word katharos. That interpretation became influential in Christian tradition and helped shape the spelling with th.

Actress Katharine Hepburn made this particular arrangement of vowels especially recognizable. The spelling also preserves a link with older Katharina forms, giving it a place in a much larger European name family. Kate, Katie, and Kit offer different everyday possibilities without replacing the formal name. For parents comparing Katherine and Katharine, the central difference is the spelling tradition they wish to continue; the two share the same underlying history and familiar short forms.
