Katharina

Katharina is a traditional German form in the Katherine family. The older Greek name Aikaterine has an uncertain derivation, but an early association with katharos, meaning pure, became firmly established. The h in forms such as Katharina reflects that history of spelling and interpretation rather than proving a single original meaning.

The name has long been used in German-speaking families, making it an established form rather than a modern expansion of Katherine. Katherina differs in its middle vowel, while Katarina omits the h; all belong to the wider family. These distinctions can be meaningful when preserving a particular relative’s name. Katharina offers the full four-syllable shape associated with its German form and a clear connection to a widely recognized international naming tradition.
