Katherina

Katherina is a form in the Katherine family, with an expanded -ina ending. Its ancestry leads to Greek Aikaterine, a name whose original meaning remains debated. The interpretation pure developed through an early association with katharos, the Greek word for purity, and has become a well-established part of the name family’s history.

Katherina has a recognizable literary connection through Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The character is also called Kate, making the play one familiar setting for both a full form and its shorter counterpart. Katherina differs from German Katharina in its middle vowel and from Katherine in its final syllable. Those distinctions let a family choose a particular written and spoken form while keeping a clear connection to the wider Katherine tradition.
