Kristen

Kristen belongs to the large Christian and Christina name family, with the underlying meaning “a Christian.” Its usage differs by language: it is a traditional masculine form in Danish and Norwegian, while English-speaking families generally know it as a feminine name related to Kristin. The spelling therefore carries more than one cultural history.

Actors Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig, and Kristen Stewart have made this form especially recognizable in English. Kristen and Kristin are easy to confuse in writing, while Kirsten changes the order of the middle sounds. Comparing those spellings aloud can help a family settle on the version they want. Kristen keeps the compact two-syllable shape and the religious root without needing a longer formal name.
